GHCDS Students Celebrate Culture, Community & Diwali!

At Good Hope Country Day School, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning experiences happen beyond the walls of a traditional classroom. Our beautiful island is rich with opportunities to discover new traditions, connect with our neighbors, and develop a deeper appreciation for the cultures and communities that make St. Croix so special.

This weekend, our talented GHCDS henna artists were invited to participate in the Diwali celebration at the Shree Ram Naya Shabha Mandir in Rattan, bringing their creativity and artistic skills to a wonderful community celebration!

In preparation for the event, students met with Ms. Sonja Sundaram to practice their henna techniques, refining their designs and preparing to share this beautiful art form with others.

A special Panther shout-out to Chaney Smith, Madison Locher, Lena Kammerzelt, Aah'Jahnique Morris, and Jumalie John, who represented GHCDS through their participation, creativity, and willingness to embrace this meaningful cultural experience. Also pictured are Sonja Sundaram and Marina Gasperi.

Diwali, often called the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindu communities and others around the world. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Through their participation, our students had an opportunity to experience these traditions firsthand while connecting with members of our island community.

Experiences like this bring our "Our Island Is Our Classroom" philosophy to life. Learning isn't limited to textbooks or school assignments. It happens through conversations, shared celebrations, artistic expression, and the willingness to step into unfamiliar experiences with curiosity and respect.

By learning about and participating in cultural and religious celebrations beyond their own experiences, our students develop empathy, cultural understanding, and a greater appreciation for the diverse traditions that enrich our world.

A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Sundaram for sharing her time and knowledge with our students, and to the Shree Ram Naya Shabha Mandir community for welcoming our young artists into this special celebration.

Rooted in St. Croix. Learning from our community. Growing as global citizens.

Because at GHCDS, our island truly is our classroom—and the opportunities to learn are everywhere!
