Panther Pride Sets Sail At The Bill Chandler Memorial Regatta!

It was a weekend of exciting competition, teamwork, and Panther Pride as our GHCDS sailors took to the waters of the St. Croix Yacht Club for the Bill Chandler Memorial Regatta, held October 24–25!

More than a sailing competition, this annual regatta celebrates the remarkable legacy of Bill Chandler, one of the original members of the St. Croix Yacht Club. An accomplished dinghy sailor who raced for more than half a century, Bill had a special love for Sunfish and Snipes. Perhaps his greatest contribution, however, was the countless hours he devoted to coaching and encouraging young sailors on St. Croix. His passion for sharing the sport continues to inspire new generations of sailors today.

This year's regatta featured Optimist (Opti) Green and Advanced fleets, Sunfish, and 420s, with the 420 competition bringing together four high school sailing teams from across the Virgin Islands: GHCDS and YSA from St. Croix, and Antilles School and VI Montessori from St. Thomas.

Our Panthers competed in a challenging high school rotation format, with A and B teams switching boats on the water after every two races. Over the course of two days, the 420 fleet completed an impressive 18 races!

Representing GHCDS were:

  • A Team: AJ Mauro and Eduardo Hermida

  • B Team: Luke Mauro, Jack Murrow, and Zaid Yusuf

A special congratulations to AJ Mauro and Eduardo Hermida, who earned SECOND PLACE in the A Team Division! What a fantastic achievement against strong inter-island competition!

Although the combined A and B team scores did not earn GHCDS an overall podium finish, our sailors gained valuable racing experience, strengthened their teamwork, and demonstrated tremendous determination and sportsmanship throughout the weekend. For some, this was their very first regatta!

And the Panther Pride didn't stop there!

Congratulations to second grader Parker Hensel, who captured FIRST PLACE in the Opti Green Fleet! What an exciting accomplishment for one of our youngest Panther sailors!

Sailing challenges students to think critically, communicate clearly, make quick decisions, and adapt to constantly changing conditions. It's a wonderful example of our “Our Island Is Our Classroom” philosophy in action, with the waters surrounding St. Croix providing opportunities for learning, leadership, resilience, and personal growth.

We are incredibly proud of every Panther who participated, from our youngest Opti competitors to our high school racing teams.

A heartfelt thank you to the St. Croix Yacht Club, the coaches, organizers, volunteers, and families who continue to support youth sailing and honor Bill Chandler's legacy by creating opportunities for the next generation.

Congratulations, Panthers! Whether you're discovering sailing for the first time or competing for a place on the podium, every race is an opportunity to learn, grow, and carry forward a wonderful island tradition.

Keep chasing the wind and making waves!
