As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, our AS Level Spanish students are doing much more than learning a language—they are using Spanish to explore the people, ideas, and cultural influences that help shape our world.
To conclude their Cultura y Entretenimiento unit, students brought some of today's most influential Latino artists to life through a creative research and interview project. Each student researched a Hispanic musician whose influence extends beyond music to include social, cultural, or community contributions.
Students then transformed their research into Spanish-language interviews, with classmates stepping into the roles of Luis Fonsi, Selena Quintanilla, Shakira, and Bad Bunny. Their conversations explored musical genres, challenges throughout the artists' careers, influence on younger generations, community involvement, and each artist's broader cultural impact.
The project is a wonderful example of our Cambridge curriculum in action. Cambridge learning encourages students to develop not only subject knowledge, but also the skills to research, communicate, think critically, consider different perspectives, and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. For our Spanish students, that means moving beyond vocabulary and grammar to using the language to investigate, understand, and communicate about the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
And that's what made this project such a fitting celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Through music and artists they already know and admire, students strengthened their Spanish skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for the stories, experiences, and contributions behind the music.
