A former Country Day School graduate, Class of 2003, Marcus Christian-Henderson, recently returned to campus to share his Buddhist faith and experiences with students in our Upper School World Religions class.
During his visit, Marcus introduced students to key aspects of Buddhist beliefs and practices, demonstrated a traditional chant, and shared a personal perspective on what his faith means to him. Students were fascinated by his presentation and asked thoughtful questions, creating an engaging conversation rooted in curiosity, respect, and a desire to understand perspectives different from their own.
Experiences like this bring our Cambridge curriculum to life. Cambridge encourages students to become confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged learners—young people who are curious about the world and prepared to thoughtfully consider different ideas, cultures, and perspectives.
Marcus's visit was also a wonderful example of our belief that “The Island is our Classroom. The World is Our Responsibility.” By drawing upon the knowledge and experiences of members of our own St. Croix community, students were able to move beyond the textbook and engage directly with the diverse beliefs and experiences that make up our wider world.
Thank you, Marcus, for returning to campus and giving our students an opportunity to listen, question, reflect, and learn—and for reminding us that some of our most meaningful teachers can be found right here in our own community.
