Fourth Grade Building A Haven For Readers

Fourth grade is a beautiful bridge toward independence—and there may be no greater tool we can give a child for the journey ahead than a genuine love of reading.

That's why our fourth-grade classrooms are intentionally designed to be havens for readers: spaces where books are within reach, curiosity is encouraged, and students have opportunities to discover the authors, genres, characters, and stories that speak to them.

At this age, literacy begins to shift. Students aren't simply learning to read; they are increasingly reading to learn, question, imagine, investigate, and understand perspectives beyond their own. They're developing the stamina and confidence to tackle more complex texts while also beginning to make independent choices about what—and why—they read.

And sometimes, building a lifelong reader begins with something wonderfully simple: a comfortable spot, a good book, and the time and space to get completely lost in a story.

As our fourth graders continue growing in independence this year, we're excited to watch them strengthen not only their literacy skills, but their identities as readers, thinkers, and lifelong learners.

Because when a child discovers that reading isn't simply something they have to do, but something they love to do, a whole world opens up.
