With a new school year comes a new responsibility for the Class of 2028—taking ownership of the Upper School Snack Shack!
Running the Snack Shack is about much more than serving up favorite lunchtime treats. Throughout the year, our juniors will gain hands-on experience in planning, budgeting, purchasing, inventory, customer service, teamwork, food preparation, problem-solving, and accountability—all while raising funds to support Junior Class activities.
But before they could open for business, there was some important training to complete!
The juniors recently met with Nurse Nelthropp for a lesson in food safety and the responsibilities that come with preparing and serving food to others. Students reviewed proper hygiene practices, learned the correct use of gloves, and discussed procedures for maintaining a clean and safe workspace.
They also learned about the importance of daily cleaning logs, refrigerator and meat thermometers, proper temperature monitoring, and food allergen awareness. Nurse Nelthropp challenged the students to think beyond the Snack Shack favorites, too, encouraging them to consider offering well-rounded meal options while being mindful of common food allergens when preparing food for large groups.
It may be called the Snack Shack, but the lessons are BIG!
From managing money and making purchasing decisions to maintaining health and safety standards and serving their fellow students, our juniors are getting a taste of what it means to run a real operation—and be responsible for its success.
We can’t wait to see what the Class of 2028 cooks up this year!
