GHCDS Students Represent St. Croix on the International Stage at ISEF

GHCDS students Tristan Samuel, Ella Evora, Madelyn Donnelly, and Avery Adams recently traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to participate in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held May 9–15. As the world’s largest international pre-college STEM competition, ISEF brought together 1,724 young scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators from 67 countries, regions, and territories, creating an extraordinary opportunity for students to share ideas, showcase research, and engage with some of the brightest young minds in the world.

After earning top honors at the GHCDS STEM Fair in March, Tristan Samuel advanced to the international level, presenting his project, “Seeing in 3D with One Eye: Geometric Structural Awareness from Monocular Visual SLAM for Low-Cost Robotic Navigation.” His work explored innovative approaches to robotic navigation and demonstrated the advanced research and problem-solving skills that have become hallmarks of GHCDS STEM students.

Madelyn Donnelly and Ella Evora presented their project, “Lunar Living, Smarter Thinking: Lunar Smart Adaptive Habitat Design with AI Psychological Monitoring for Crew Adaptive Positive Mental Health.” Originally developed through the NASA HUNCH program, their research examined how artificial intelligence could support the mental well-being of astronauts living and working in long-duration lunar habitats.

Representing GHCDS as an observer, Avery Adams participated in special ISEF programming, supported the competing students throughout the week, and volunteered as a tour guide during Public Visitation Day, helping local students explore the exhibits and learn more about the exciting world of STEM research.

Beyond the competition itself, the week was filled with memorable educational experiences. Students attended seminars on communicating scientific ideas, participated in panel discussions featuring Nobel Prize winners and technology industry leaders, and connected with peers from around the globe through a variety of student-focused events. Highlights included the famous international pin exchange, student networking events, and the Host City Celebration held at the home stadium of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Reflecting on the experience, Ella shared, “The trip grew my love for science, and I loved being around like-minded people who were all highly intelligent. It was essentially a nerd party.”

Joining the group as a chaperone, Quiana Adams described the experience as “exciting, thrilling, amazing, and inspiring,” noting how powerful it was to witness firsthand the opportunities available to GHCDS students when curiosity, hard work, and innovation come together.
