GHCDS Scientists on the Move: A Tree-mendous Day of Discovery!

Our 2nd grade scientists took their learning beyond the classroom on an exciting field trip to the St. George Village Botanical Garden for a hands-on program called “Tree Treasures,” coordinated by Jodie Smolik—and what an adventure it was!

During this two-hour exploration, students dove into the world of trees as a vital natural resource. Armed with curiosity, they set off on a leaf treasure hunt, identifying simple and compound leaves while making clever connections to compound words. The learning didn’t stop there—students played interactive games using tree pods to discover how seeds are protected and dispersed, and even learned how a Jamaican Fruit Bat “Buddy” plays an important role in pollination and the growth of new plants.

Adding a creative twist, students celebrated National Poetry Month by enjoying a special “Poe-TREE” experience, blending science, literacy, and imagination in a truly memorable way.

This field trip is a wonderful example of the Cambridge curriculum in action, where students engage in experiential, inquiry-based learning that connects classroom concepts to the real world. By exploring ecosystems firsthand, asking questions, and making interdisciplinary connections, our young Panthers are developing the critical thinking skills and global awareness that will serve them for years to come.

It was a joyful day filled with discovery, creativity, and connection to nature—leaving our GHCDS scientists inspired by the incredible world around them!
