Second Grade Scientists Explore How Canyons Are Formed!

Our 2nd grade scientists had an exciting, hands-on learning experience as they explored one of Earth’s most fascinating processes—how canyons are formed! With curiosity leading the way, students began by making predictions and hypothesizing about how water might shape the land over time.

Using cornmeal to build their own model landscapes, students carefully dripped water over their creations and watched as the “land” began to shift, carve, and change. With each drop, they observed erosion in action, seeing firsthand how water can slowly create valleys and canyon-like formations—just like in the natural world.

This engaging activity is a perfect example of the Cambridge curriculum in action, where students learn through inquiry, experimentation, and real-world connections. Rather than simply reading about erosion, students experienced it, asked questions, and made connections between their models and the Earth’s processes.

It was a joyful and meaningful day of discovery, where science came to life—and our young Panthers truly thought like scientists!
