Who says learning about finance can’t be exciting? In Ms. DeRuyter’s Personal Finance class, students took their ideas from concept to pitch in a high-energy, hands-on “Shark Tank” experience—and the results were nothing short of impressive!
Students stepped into the role of entrepreneurs, developing creative business ideas and presenting them to a panel of “sharks”: Mark Locher, Kelly Simon, and Sarah Vaughn. Each team had to think critically about their product, market it effectively, and confidently pitch why their idea deserved investment.
The innovation on display was incredible! Proposals included:
-
A “Compliment Printer” that delivers uplifting messages right when you need them most
-
A fashion app that helps you plan the perfect outfit for any occasion
-
The Crutch Pocket, a practical redesign of crutches with built-in storage for phones and wallets
-
And even contact lenses with built-in sunglasses—perfect for bright days at the beach!
With persuasive presentations, creative problem-solving, and a little competitive spirit, students brought their ideas to life—and yes, deals were made!
This kind of experiential learning is at the heart of the Cambridge curriculum, which emphasizes real-world application, critical thinking, communication, and innovation. Rather than simply learning about business concepts, students practiced them—developing confidence, collaboration skills, and the ability to think like future entrepreneurs.
At GHCDS, learning is active, engaging, and connected to the real world—and this Shark Tank experience proves it. Who knows? We may have just witnessed the beginnings of the next big idea!
