Panthers Take First Place at the St. Croix District MATHCOUNTS Competition!

GHCDS is bursting with Panther Pride as our middle school mathematicians (Hudson Mirocha, David Vaughn, Liam McKale, Simon Noellien and Wajeeh Abdallah, earned First Place at the St. Croix District MATHCOUNTS Competition, held on February 24 at the University of the Virgin Islands Albert A. Sheen Campus. Competing against talented students from schools across the island, our Panthers rose to the challenge and demonstrated exceptional mathematical skill, teamwork, and determination.

Approximately 50 students from public, private, and parochial schools participated in the event across the territory, widely recognized as the nation’s premier middle school mathematics competition. After months of preparation and practice, students competed in a series of individual and team rounds, including written tests and fast-paced oral matches that challenged their mathematical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration skills.

Our GHCDS team stood out with their strong performance, securing first place in the district and proudly representing the spirit of academic excellence that defines Panther Pride. The achievement reflects not only the students’ dedication and hard work, but also the guidance and encouragement of their teachers and mentors.

Special recognition goes to Coach Heidi Driscoll for her exceptional leadership, mentorship, and dedication to student success. Her guidance played a vital role in preparing the team for this high-level competition and inspiring our students to perform at their very best.

The competition was organized by the Virgin Islands Department of Education, with Ms. Jaynea Williams serving as St. Croix District Math Coordinator, and special support from the Rotary Club Mid-Isle. Participating schools included Church of God Holiness Academy, Free Will Baptist Christian School, Good Hope Country Day School, John H. Woodson Jr. High School, and Pearl B. Larsen K–8 School.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program dedicated to building confidence in mathematics and strengthening problem-solving skills among middle school students, helping prepare the next generation of innovators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Congratulations to our incredible Panthers for bringing home the District Championship and representing GHCDS with excellence!
