The GHCDS Varsity Sailing Team proudly represented Panther Nation this past weekend at the SAISA North Points #6 Regatta in James Island, South Carolina, competing against some of the top high school sailing programs in the region. Demonstrating resilience, skill, and determination, the Panthers finished 10th overall out of 19 teams, with several strong race performances that showcased the team’s growing strength on the water.
High school sailing is a fast-paced and highly strategic sport where teams race two boats simultaneously in A and B divisions, rotating sailors throughout the regatta. Success depends not only on boat speed, but also on team communication, tactical decision-making, and adaptability to changing weather and wind conditions. GHCDS sailors compete within the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (SAISA), one of the regional districts of Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA). SAISA includes some of the strongest high school sailing programs in the country, with teams from across the southeastern United States regularly competing in highly competitive regattas.
Day one of the event tested sailors’ patience and perseverance, as the fleet faced cold, rainy conditions and extremely light wind. After a 45-minute postponement and one abandoned race due to lack of breeze, the team battled through difficult conditions and completed six races, showing focus and determination despite the challenging weather.
Day two brought renewed energy from the Panthers. The team came out firing with an impressive 3rd-place finish in the opening race, demonstrating strong boat handling and tactical awareness. However, as the day progressed, the wind quickly built to heavy and potentially unsafe conditions, leading race officials to cancel the remaining races for safety.
Throughout the weekend, the GHCDS sailors demonstrated the qualities that define Panther athletics—grit, teamwork, and resilience. Competing against larger mainland programs while traveling away from home is no small feat, and our sailors rose to the challenge with confidence and determination.
We are incredibly proud of our Panthers for representing GHCDS with skill and sportsmanship on the regional stage. Fair winds to the team as they continue their sailing season!
