Our 2nd graders took the stage and truly wowed the audience this week as they shared what they’ve been learning about Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year—one of the most vibrant and widely celebrated holidays in the world.

Over the past several weeks, students have been exploring the history and meaning behind this centuries-old celebration. They learned about how the lunar calendar determines the start of the new year, discovered the traditions and stories connected to the holiday’s origins, and studied the Chinese zodiac, which assigns an animal to each year in a repeating cycle of twelve.

The class also dove into the colorful traditions that make the Lunar New Year so special—from decorations meant to welcome good fortune to the customs families follow to begin the year with positivity and hope.

As part of their hands-on learning, students created beautiful lanterns—a traditional symbol of light and celebration—and carefully hand-painted “Fu” signs, which represent good fortune and blessings for the coming year. Their artwork added a festive glow to the celebration and showed the pride they took in learning about another culture.

Students were especially excited to share that we are welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse. This rare combination occurs only once every 60 years, making 2026 particularly special. In Chinese tradition, the Fire Horse symbolizes energy, courage, transformation, and bold ambition. It is believed to be a powerful time for progress and new beginnings, while also reminding us to stay balanced, take care of ourselves, and remain focused on our goals.

Through their presentation, our young scholars not only shared fascinating facts but also demonstrated curiosity, creativity, and global awareness. We are so proud of our 2nd grade Panthers for bringing the spirit of the Lunar New Year to life and reminding us all to welcome the year ahead with optimism and excitement.

Happy Lunar New Year!
