GHCDS Mini-Gusto: A Week in Occupational Therapy at JS Therapies

Mini-Gusto Week opened the door to real-world learning for senior Bella Davis-McCarthy, who spent the week immersed in a hands-on internship at JS Therapies. With a strong interest in pursuing a career in Occupational Therapy, Bella stepped beyond the classroom and into the clinic to experience firsthand how OTs help children thrive.

Under the generous mentorship of Julie Sommers and her incredible team, Bella observed and participated in pediatric occupational therapy sessions both in the clinic and in school settings. She learned how therapists support children in developing fine motor skills, sensory regulation, coordination, independence, and confidence—skills that empower students to be their very best in everyday life.

One of the most exciting moments of the week came when JS Therapies brought their therapy bus to the Early Learning Center. “Sunny” rolled onto campus to introduce our youngest Panther Cubs to the world of Occupational Therapy—sharing how OTs help children grow, move, learn, and succeed. Bella was right there alongside the team, connecting her classroom knowledge with practical experience.

Inspired by what she learned, Bella even designed a creative coloring page about Occupational Therapy for the ELC students—an engaging way to help young learners understand how therapy supports their growth and development.

This internship was more than observation; it was meaningful exploration, mentorship, and confirmation of a future path. We are so grateful to Julie Sommers and the entire JS Therapies team for making the week both educational and unforgettable.

Mini-Gusto continues to provide our students with authentic, career-connected experiences—and Bella’s journey into Occupational Therapy is a shining example of learning in action.
