GHCDS Mini-Gusto: Chess – Strategy, Focus, and a Whole Lot of Fun

This year’s Mini-Gusto Chess activity was a true meeting of minds! In partnership with the VI Chess Federation, GHCDS students spent an engaging afternoon immersed in the art of strategy, patience, and tactical thinking.

From the very first move, the room was alive with concentration and quiet excitement. Students learned not only how each piece moves, but how to think several steps ahead—anticipating their opponent’s strategy while refining their own. Chess is more than a game; it’s a powerful exercise in critical thinking, problem-solving, pattern recognition, and decision-making under pressure. It builds focus, strengthens memory, and teaches resilience—because every setback is simply a setup for the next move.

One of the highlights of the day was an impressive simultaneous exhibition match: Dr. Rob Goldberg took on all 14 students at once. Circling the tables with calm precision, he engaged each player in turn—thinking strategically across every board. While Dr. Goldberg ultimately won the challenge, our Panthers held their own with determination and grit, learning valuable lessons with every move.

Beyond the competition, the afternoon was filled with camaraderie, laughter, and thoughtful discussion. Students discovered that chess rewards patience, discipline, and creativity—qualities that extend far beyond the board and into academics, athletics, and life.

We are grateful to the VI Chess Federation and Dr. Goldberg for sharing their expertise and passion with our students. Mini-Gusto Chess reminded us that sometimes the most powerful victories come not from winning—but from learning, thinking boldly, and daring to make the next move.
