Adventure, courage, and hands-on learning defined this year’s 6th Grade Dennis Sullivan Experience—and what a week it was!
The first day at sea brought rolling waves and big excitement. Though the waters were a bit wavy, students embraced the challenge, quickly finding their sea legs and declaring that they truly felt like “real sailors” out on the open ocean. From the moment the sails were raised, the crew spirit was alive and well.
Thursday’s time at the dock gave everyone the opportunity to climb the ship’s towering masts—an unforgettable experience that required bravery and trust. Step by step, students pushed past their comfort zones, climbing higher and higher to take in breathtaking views from above. It was a powerful reminder that growth happens when we dare to rise.
By Friday, the sea had calmed, providing a smooth and beautiful sail. Students experienced the thrill of harnessing up and heading out onto the headrig, feeling the wind and truly understanding the power and grace of a tall ship under sail.
Throughout the week, students rotated through hands-on learning stations, diving into topics such as buoyancy, ocean optics, navigation, knot tying, and sail hoisting. They didn’t just learn about maritime science—they lived it. Every rope pulled, every knot tied, and every sail raised required cooperation and communication.
More than just a sailing trip, the Dennis Sullivan Experience strengthened essential character traits. Students practiced trust, teamwork, clear communication, resilience, and self-confidence. They learned that a ship only sails well when everyone works together—and that each individual plays an important role in the journey.
By the end of the week, our 6th graders returned to shore not just as students, but as a crew—stronger, braver, and more connected than when they first set sail.
