The Panther of the Week honor is reserved for GHCDS athletes who rise above the challenge through exceptional performance, grit, and sportsmanship—and this week, it proudly belongs to our Girls Basketball Panthers.
Our Varsity Girls Basketball Team took the court this Friday with just five players—Amalie-Laeah Figueroa, Anna-Marie Figueroa, Kimaya Jackson, Aryanna Tutein, and Marianna Boatswain (not pictured). Early in the first quarter, an injury forced the team into a daunting 4-on-5 matchup for the remainder of the game against the Caribs. While many teams might have folded under the pressure, these Panthers did the opposite. They battled possession by possession, defended relentlessly, and played with heart and determination until the final whistle—a true display of Panther Pride.
That same fearless spirit carried into the weekend. Although GHCDS does not currently have a JV Girls Basketball Team, when the Middle School girls division of the SCEC Tournament was canceled, we seized the opportunity to compete. A new JV team was formed by combining five Middle School players with three 10th-grade varsity athletes, stepping onto the court against older, more experienced teams. While this David-versus-Goliath effort didn’t end with a win, the composure, effort, and skill shown by these players spoke volumes.
These young women showed resilience, courage, and belief in one another—qualities that define great teams and strong programs. Their performance makes one thing clear: the future of girls basketball at GHCDS is bright.
Congratulations to our Girls Basketball Panthers for embodying determination, teamwork, and unwavering Panther Pride. You inspire us all!
