Thinking Like Linguists: GHCDS Students Take on Olympiad Challenge

GHCDS students recently spent an enriching and challenging day at the University of the Virgin Islands, where they had the opportunity to meet Dr. Walter and participate in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO). Representing GHCDS with focus and determination were Asia William, Cole Cullinan, Cameron Cullinan, Vedant Mital, Nicholas Crikelair, and Tristian Samuel, all of whom rose to the occasion in every possible way.

The NACLO is a rigorous academic competition that challenges students to think like linguists and computer scientists—no prior knowledge of foreign languages is required. Instead, students analyze patterns, decode unfamiliar writing systems, and solve complex logic-based problems that mirror how computers process language. Throughout the day, our students worked through demanding puzzles that required critical thinking, perseverance, and creative problem-solving, approaching each challenge with curiosity, confidence, and collaboration.

All six students received certificates of participation in recognition of their hard work and commitment, and we look forward to sharing updates once the official results are released. We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Walter and the University of the Virgin Islands for making this exceptional learning experience available to our students and for welcoming them into a collegiate academic environment that celebrates inquiry and intellectual challenge. Opportunities like this highlight the power of partnerships and provide meaningful, real-world experiences that inspire our students to think boldly and engage deeply with complex ideas.
