This week the student gardeners learned about the full cycle that plants go through in order to survive. We talked about a plants man goal is to ‘make babies’. After visiting the garden and noticing that there were 15 long beans that had gone brown and shriveled up, the students took them back to the lunch table to open the pods up and discover the seeds. We talked about how this was the starting point from when we first planted. Then each student donated one of their new seeds and planted it for the community garden. The rest of their seeds were given to them to take home and plant.
We then explored two loofa plants and talked about how some plants are not just for eating, but plants can also be useful. They took the outside skin off and squished and squeezed the dried up loofa plant- and discovered that there were seeds in there as well. We ended with planting a new seedling tray of loofa, long beans, peppers, corn and zinnia flowers.
