Passing the Whistle: Upperclassmen Lead the Way

The Panther of the Week honor is reserved for GHCDS student-athletes who go above and beyond—showing leadership, sportsmanship, and a true commitment to our school community. This week, that recognition proudly goes to senior Omar Hamed and junior Alex McCants.

With a referee shortage threatening to pause basketball play last week, Omar and Alex stepped up in a powerful way. As varsity players, they volunteered to serve as referees for the season-opening games of our elementary girls’ and boys’ teams, ensuring that the season could move forward without interruption. Their willingness to give back allowed our youngest Panthers to take the court, compete, and experience the joy of game day.

By stepping into the role of referee, Omar and Alex gained valuable leadership experience—learning to see the game from a new perspective, make fair and timely decisions, and model sportsmanship for younger athletes. More importantly, they demonstrated what it truly means to be a Panther: supporting others, leading by example, and strengthening our community through service.

Congratulations, Omar and Alex, and thank you for helping keep the Panther spirit—and the season—moving forward!
