Learning About Dr. King: First Graders Explore a Legacy of Peace

Ms. Deevy's first graders spent the week learning about the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Through songs, games, and hands-on activities, students explored who Dr. King was and why his message of peace and equality still matters today. On Thursday, January 15th, the class even sang “Happy Birthday” to honor Dr. King and celebrate his impact.

Students created a timeline of Dr. King’s life, played a true-or-false game to test their knowledge, and worked together to organize pictures showing life “then and now.” To culminate their learning, first graders spent two days creating a meaningful Martin Luther King Jr. mobile. Each mobile included powerful symbols connected to his life and work, such as a dove representing peace, the United States flag, the Nobel Peace Prize, a bus symbolizing the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Atlanta, Georgia, and hands of many colors representing unity and people around the world. Through this creative project, students proudly demonstrated their understanding of Dr. King’s message of hope, equality, and kindness.
