A Dream That Lives On: 2nd Grade Studies Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This week, our 2nd graders explored the life and lasting legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., learning about his role as a leader of the Civil Rights Movement and his lifelong commitment to fairness, justice, and equality for all people. Students learned that Dr. King believed change could be achieved through peaceful protest and nonviolent action, inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.

Through class discussions and age-appropriate lessons, students built their understanding of important vocabulary such as discrimination, segregation, and boycott, and learned how these concepts shaped life in America during Dr. King’s time. They also discovered that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is sometimes called Equality Day, a time to reflect on treating others with kindness, respect, and fairness.

To bring their learning to life, students watched highlights from the historic March on Washington and listened to portions of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. As they listened, students reflected on his powerful message about judging people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. To conclude the unit, students created trifold informational pamphlets, proudly sharing what they learned about Dr. King’s life, his dreams for the future, and how his message of equality continues to inspire us today.
