The Public Speaking Club at GHCDS recently launched its Guest Speaker Program with a visit from Mr. Capriola, a former public speaking professor at the University of the Virgin Islands. As the inaugural candidate of the series, he truly set the tone high, demonstrating his years of wisdom and expertise.
During the session, Mr. Capriola emphasized that effective public speaking is not about talking to an audience, but about having a conversation with them. Students learned how strong speakers build connections by engaging listeners, reading audience reactions, and adjusting their delivery in real time.
Mr. Capriola also discussed how nervousness can be used as an advantage rather than a setback. He shared how embracing nerves can add energy, authenticity, and relatability to speeches, allowing students to connect more genuinely with their audience.
The event set a strong foundation for the Guest Speaker Program and reinforced the club’s mission to develop confident, adaptable communicators through real-world speaking experiences.
