GHCDS 6th Grade Researchers Take on Real-World Issues

This week, our 6th grade researchers stepped into the role of young changemakers, putting their research and analysis skills to work on issues that matter right here in our local community. Working in collaborative pairs, students identified topics they felt deeply connected to—ranging from vandalism and gang violence to rising costs of living and concerns surrounding WAPA.

Once their topics were chosen, students designed thoughtful questionnaires and set out to gather real data by polling their classmates. They analyzed the results, discussed patterns and perspectives, and reflected on what the data revealed—not just about the issue itself, but about how people in their community think and feel.

The project didn’t stop with research. As a powerful final step, students were challenged to consider action—asking themselves how they, even as young citizens, could help raise awareness or inspire change. Their responses were insightful and purposeful:

  • drafting a petition to address gun violence,

  • creating an informational poster on alternative energy sources, and

  • proposing stronger policies and consequences to address vandalism.

Through this project, our 6th graders learned that research isn’t just about facts and figures—it’s about understanding people, asking meaningful questions, and using knowledge to make a difference. We are proud to see our Panthers thinking critically, collaborating thoughtfully, and beginning to find their voices as informed and engaged citizens.
