GHCDS NHS Students Celebrate International Day of Peace

The National Honor Society at GHCDS kicked off the year with a beautiful act of service, volunteering at the International Day of Peace celebration hosted by the Children’s Museum. This event gave our students the opportunity to embody the values of leadership, character, and service while spreading a message of peace and joy to the youngest members of our community.

In preparation, NHS students learned how to fold origami paper cranes, a global symbol of peace. They then shared this art at the event, guiding children and families through the delicate folding process. They also read aloud Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, the moving story that inspired the tradition of folding a thousand cranes as a wish for peace.

Throughout the day, students manned play stations that sparked creativity and connection — from building blocks and Lego cars to the ever-popular bubble station. Their presence lit up the museum as they engaged with children, parents, and community members alike.

This year, GHCDS NHS is committed to volunteering as a group at as many events as possible, and this was just the beginning. Allegra Ferraras, Elias Ruderfer (NHS President), Vedant Mittal, Asia Williams, Kennedy James, Bella Davis-McCarthy, Allison Joseph, Ayden Cintron, Isabel Coursey, and Madelyn Donelly represented GHCDS proudly at the event.

Looking ahead, NHS plans to continue their partnership with the Children’s Museum throughout the year and will be back in action next Sunday to volunteer at the International Day of Play celebration.

We are so proud of these student leaders for their energy, generosity, and commitment to making a difference.
