"The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men"

“The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men
Gang aft agley,...”
Robert Burns

Dear parents,

If over the past month you found yourself saying, “We need some rain,” you got what you wanted, and then some. Indeed, I found myself saying the same thing. But last night, as I heard the rumbling storm, I thought, “I think that’s enough.”

There were a few times, when the rain slowed down a bit, that I wondered if I might have made the decision to cancel school a bit too hastily. However, here I sit in my office, and the rain keeps coming. The campus is saturated. There are some classrooms in the middle and upper school that are taking on water through the back doors and floor boards. Mr. Ainger and Ms. Rose are working to clean up the mess and seal what they can. The good news is that the drainage ditches that were recently cleaned are moving water away from the buildings and into the lower parking lot; but the parking lot is half underwater.

I think another positive coming out of this is that we were able to communicate to the community via several different platforms including the Edlio App, email, text, and Facebook. I’m happy about that.

All this being said, it’s never easy to make the decision to close the school, despite my real concerns regarding safety. Indeed, when I retired (the first time), I said that one of the things I would not miss about the job was having to make that decision.

For your information, we have also decided to postpone the Middle and Upper School Parent Information Night. We have tentatively rescheduled this event for next Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 5:00 to 6:30 P.M.

In the meantime, put your feet up, have a cup of tea, read a book, play cards with your kids, and be thankful for the rain.

Warmly,
Bill Sinfield
