From Plastic-Free to Panther Pride: Maya’s Reusable Utensil Initiative

Last Tuesday, senior Maya Prasad ’26 inspired the GHCDS faculty with a presentation on her upcoming “Reusable Utensil Initiative.” This student-led project aims to reduce—and eventually eliminate—single-use plastic utensils on our campus.

Maya’s proposal introduces a sustainable system in which students will be encouraged to bring their own reusable utensils and food containers from home. For those who forget, compostable forks will be available for purchase, ensuring that convenience never comes at the cost of our environment. Students will be responsible for cleaning and reusing their utensils, reinforcing both personal accountability and environmental stewardship.

The initiative goes beyond utensils—it’s about cultivating awareness. Maya hopes to educate her peers on the environmental and health impacts of disposable plastics, while fostering a culture of sustainability and responsibility at GHCDS.

We are proud to celebrate Maya’s leadership, vision, and commitment to positive change. Her work exemplifies what it means to be a Panther: thoughtful, proactive, and determined to make a difference.
