The competition welcomed top teams from every state, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Guam, as well as overseas Department of Defense and State Department schools. Competition teams were comprised of the top 4 individuals from each state's competition, plus the coach of the state's top team. Teague secured his place on the team by placing 3rd in the territorial finals in March.
